Journal Entry 1: The Bus Ride to Rurrenbaque

I am transposing exact journal entries from my Rurrenbacque adventures…. Heres the first one. There should be many more to follow in the next few days.

April 22nd

Currently I am aboard a bus in Bolivia, getting the textbook experience that everyone speaks of….Pure, unadulterated HELL. The roads are unpaved and terrible, and they keep letting more and more people on the bus. The aisles are filled . One woman in particular keeps bumping into me. I think currently there are 45 people on bus that holds 20. Of course, I do not even come close to fitting and my legs are in the aisles further complicating things.

More La Paz… The Highest Golf in the world and the Bolvian Diet

I decided to do some research into playing golf in La Paz. Mostly because I am a golf junkie and have not played in months and months. Secondly because I wanted to play in the high altitude and hit the ball a mile.

My new Irish friends Jenny and DJ, they are cousins and very cool peeps, both love golf and expressed interest in playing one night over some cocktails. I do think they were a bit surprised when I showed up in their room at 11am ready to play the next morning. Jenny, had a big one the night before, but somehow found the motivation with some encouragement from DJ to get up and play.

The Worlds Most Dangerous Road

The Worlds Most Dangerous Road-

Yes, this sounds like a tourist trap. It sounds like something cliche that you have to be a part of just to get the T-shirt. Well, let me be perfectly clear. I have hanglided, and skydived before with no problems whatsoever. Biking down this road was the the absoloute scariest shit I have ever done in my entire life.

About a month ago an Israeli dude went over the edge and died. He dropped 400 meters and they did not find him for a few days. Over the course of the last 10 years when they have done this, there have been 10 total deaths. So, Orla, Martin, Kash, Dark Horse Al, and I went with the best company (Gravity) and got the best bikes possible (they cost about $2500 bucks a piece). The downhills were ridiculous, waterfalls poured over the road in spots, and 75 percent of the trip was over slippery gravel. I felt a bit like a little girl as Orla flew past me a few times.

Note to self: Its Ok to bike like a little girl when you are next to a 500 meter cliff.

An Irish Experience – Clarifying the cast of Characters

Before I get into the Dangerous Road, La Paz, the Jungle, and the world I need to expand further on the amazing people I have been traveling with over the course of the last month.

The Irish Contingent-

I want to expand more on Martin and Orla, who I first met in Lima. They both gave quite a bit of shit for their generic introduction in my previous Copacabana entry. The truth, is that these guys have become very good friends in the past month of travel. The further truth, is that I do not know how the hell they travel together.

End of the Dark Ages…. and Back into the Light

Wow… Its been a while since any sort of updates have been possible. I am not going to bitch and moan about the Internet in Bolivia, or the fact that I was in the Jungle, or the fact the La Paz is a pretty ridiculous party town (Its one of the craziest placest I have been). All of these have been factors, but they are all being overcome right this second.

I am going to transpose exact journal entries from the Pampas Tour in Rurrenbaque in the Jungle and from my recollections of the past few weeks. This might seem a bit thrown together (maybe a bit confusing), but I want to take this blog down a sort of ¨Jackson Pollock¨ organized chaos direction over the next few months. I do not think I am going to have much of a choice in this country. So, enjoy the journal entries and the pix. If something doesn’t make sense, please post a comment and I will any and all questions on the comment board.
