On this past Cross Country trip I visited New Orleans for the 4th time in my life. My most recent visit was for Jazzfest, the summer before Hurricane Katrina hit.

This next episode of Cross Country TV differs from the rest greatly. We decided to focus specifically on our tour of the 9th ward. Which, by all accounts, was a very serious, eye opening point in the trip for the 5 of us.

Our gracious hosts Bubbles and Warren, who have lived in New Orleans for over 20 years, spent 47 days without electricity during the storm. They ended up being very lucky. They saw limited damage to their property and from what they say their spirits remained high over the month and a half of struggle.

Things were vastly different in the 9th ward then, and today it nothing more than a “wasteland”.

Francis Cabatac–our editor and video production guy–took our footage from the 9th Ward and gave it life, feeling, and meaning.

The musical selection is “The Little Things Give you Away” written and performed by Linkin Park about “Hurricane Katrina” in New Orleans.

Let me know what you think. Go to the bottom of this post and Comment!

  1. You know, it’s a sad commentary on America’s leadership when we are spending over $8 Billion a month to kill innocent people in Iraq (including over 64,000 American casualties) and then turn our back on our own people of New Orleans who have suffered so much. To date George “Dumbya” Bush has spent over $491 billion in Irag. Can you imagine how the world, and especially New Orleans, would be different if he had used $135 billion of that to rebuild New Orleans??

  2. Dr. Bagwell,

It’s great to hear from you. I hope that you are well. I sincerely appreciate all that you have contributed to the University of Maryland System and its students.
Taking your leadership course impacted my life in several ways. Thank you for your guidance.

Onto the topic of discussion, although I appreciate your opinions and political beliefs, could you downplay the bias just a little? Your comment on killing innocent Iraqi citizens is an insult to the men & women who serve in our Armed Forces…including me. I have been in the military for 10 years and served overseas three times since 9/11. I can attest that no person in our military “war machine” wants any innocent person to die. We protect those who cannot protect themselves. I have witnessed the destruction caused by Sadaam Hussein and the Taliban and can honestly say that the positive improvements are beyond what the media portrays. Specifically, we have provided medical attention and care to every person in need, we have given children the opportunity to return to school and have provided women rights that they were deprived of only when the Taliban and Sadaam Hussein were in power. We are making a difference.
