The Coney Island Mermaid Parade
All I knew about Coney Island before I moved to New York City is that it used to be “the” vacation spot for New Yorkers in the 1920’s. Since those glory days the neighborhood has gone through a long period of decline.
After hanging out Saturday all day on the southern most part of Brooklyn I realized that there is a lot more to Coeny Island then meets the eye. It is one of the most interesting, off the tourist map areas that I have experienced yet in NYC. Saturday was the Mermaid Parade (my friends are pictured above) . It was by far the wildest scene that I have experienced since moving up here.
Maybe it had something to do with the 60 year old Indian man with a turban and long white beard. That same man was in full drag with a parrot on his head and a pink “dyed” poodle in his arms. He walked back and forth on the sidelines of the parade introducing his poodle to the crowds as his daughter. There were mermaids, mermen, many King Neptunes, octopus, live bands on the back of trucks, topless women, full body painted multi-colored women, guys in drag, dancers, tricycles, a sword swallower, and a 5 year old girl dressed up like a crab on 7 foot stilts.
My friend Matt and I from work decided to video the spectacle. Who knew that it was legal to be naked in New York City? We got some great footage. It should be produced up very shortly.
Rakesh from India Update
Things are going swimmingly with Rakesh, my virtual assistant in India. He is doing a good job but I having trouble keeping him busy. I have him doing a lot of internet marketing and research. I also had him write a blog update. Clearly this guy is overqualified to work for me.
This is Rakesh from India, I work as a virtual assistant for Dave ford. I would like to share a few things about my last weekend, Last weekend I enjoyed in the rains, I just love this monsoon season. After completing my shift it was already Saturday morning I went to versova beach with my colleague, Sejo Jose. This is one of the best beaches in Mumbai. This Saturday morning it wasn’t raining heavily. With Sejo I enjoyed walking on the beach. He talks a lot and perfectly matches a person like me who talks less but like to listen to others. He has been my colleague for just a month but he has already made it to my best friends list. After traveling I came home. It was raining very heavily all through Saturday, Sunday and Monday so I had to skip my movie schedule. These heavy rains remind me of my college days, Oh! How I miss those days. I wish I had never grown up. I used to enjoy the droplets which were dripping from leaves. As soon as I smelt the sweet fragrance of wet mud it took me back to my college days. Although right now I am doing MBA(PGDBA),but I shut all my management books and reopened my old book of Plant Embryology, and just brushed through the different types of ovules, this study and environment refreshed my mind, I always enjoyed reading books and articles which described about plants. Books were my best friends most of my life. Something that I really enjoyed during rains is riding my bike and I love to eat ‘Bhajiya Pav’ and ‘Chana Jor Garam’ as we call it here my favorite is Mumbai’s ‘Wada Pav’ which is also called the ‘Indian hamburger’. Though I had to stay at home most of the time I still love the monsoons, this weekend gave me time to recollect memories.
Kilimanjaro Update
We are close to finishing up the footage of Marvin and I climbing Kilimanjaro. I really like what we have so far but am attempting to cut it down to 4 and 1/2 minutes from 7 and 1/2 minutes. It is not easy to edit 8 days of footage down to 4 1/2 minutes.
