Dave Ford 3.0 – Thoughts on my Personal Development

I have been thinking a lot lately about my personal development: Where I have been, where I am presently, and where I am going.

I have decided to work this all out in my head in computer software terms–as I am clearly becoming a nerd.

Dave Ford 1.0-(Ages 22-28) Buying a house in Baltimore, working for huge media companies (Hearst, Clear Channel), getting introduced to meditation, reading more books about business and travel that you could imagine, and  finding success in the conventional world

New York City Present Tense – July 2nd 2008

I am sitting on the gritty gray steps in front of Union Square on a evening in early July. It is 8:07. I got out of work around 6, went to gym, and ate dinner.  Union Square is a few blocks away from the gym and it lies on the R line–the subway that I use the most as it runs directly from my house in Brooklyn to my work in the garment district of Manhattan. Union Square is overflowing with people. If I stood up and tried to count the number of people around me I know that my attempt would be futile. There has to be at least 500 people in my immediate sight-line. Not counting the people that are passing in and out of my view. There are soft drums coming from a group of street performers to my left. There is also an abnormally large crowd of roller bladers huddled together blocking my view of the percussion ensemble. I am not sure if the group is coming or going. I am not even sure why the plans of the roller bladers pass through my stream of consciousness—I find roller blading silly. The accents I hear around me are varied. The people within 20 feet of me are made up of all different shades of color—not just the standard black, white, brown, and yellow. I imagine they represent 20 different countries.

The Coney Island Mermaid Parade

All I knew about Coney Island before I moved to New York City is that it used to be “the” vacation spot for New Yorkers in the 1920′s. Since those glory days the neighborhood has gone through a long period of decline.

After hanging out Saturday all day on the southern most part of Brooklyn I realized that there is a lot more to Coeny Island then meets the eye. It is one of the most interesting, off the tourist map areas that I have experienced yet in NYC. Saturday was the Mermaid Parade (my friends are pictured above) . It was by far the wildest scene that I have experienced since moving up here.

101 Degrees in the Big Apple with NO AC

Oh my!  We all saw it coming. The Nuge, Wendy, and I have been talking about this for months. How could we have procrastinated like this? How could we have been so incredibly lazy? How could we have possibly not bought an air conditioner before this heatwave rolled in? How have we survived the last two days in which temperatures soared over 100 degrees in NYC?  I woke up this morning a hot, sweaty mess.

A Brooklyn Highschool and Sean Bell

Below is the first guest post of my friend Wendy Brown. Wendy teaches the 9th grade at a Brooklyn high school–her classes are ethnically and economically diverse. However, the vast majority of her students fall into the economic category society would describe as “working poor.”

In New York–as well as nationwide–the Sean Bell case is major news. The 3 police officers that shot Sean Bell–a 23 year old, unarmed African American man– to death a few hours before his wedding day were acquitted a few weeks back. In response, community activists–including Al Sharpton–  staged sit ins to block the major entries and exits to Manhattan. Coverage of these events have been impossible to dodge in NYC. It has been the lead story on the TV news and on the front page of every paper. Wendy wrote this a few weeks back. I apologize in the delay in posting it.

There are some serious pieces of news occurring in New York City. I am very pleased that Wendy likes to write about them. : )
